Here is a boring disclaimer before I start. If you had the option to buy a ready made WordPress theme or get one custom built for you, I would recommend the latter every single day. But custom WordPress themes are expensive, right? Actually, they don’t have to be.

So, WordPress themes and where are the best places to buy theme. There are a good few reputable sources of paid and free WordPress themes out there. Below is a list, it’s not completely comprehensive but I have had some interaction with some on this list. But I can’t vouch for every thing here so please do your due diligence with parting with any hard earned cash. Oh and if you know of any other that might be worth including here then let me know!

WordPress Theme Directory

Ok, the first port of call for any new website is, can I get it done for free. Maybe is the answer.

The first place to check out is the WordPress Theme Directory. It’s a source of free WordPress themes that have been reviewed before they are allowed to be listed.

The best of all they are all 100% GPL or compatible, which essentially means ‘freedom’ of use.

As a side note, WordPress added a new section that I have only just noticed myself, called Commercial Themes. It’s worth having a look at the vetted commercial themes that WordPress lists here.

ThemeForest

In my early days, I bought themes from ThemeForest. It was my main source of pre-built WordPress themes but now over the last good few years, I have solely developed custom themes from scratch. It’s easier, cheaper, and more effective in the long run to do custom theme design.

My experience was pretty good of ThemeForest years ago. It is a marketplace for theme developers, from independent coders to much larger agencies.

It has a huge selection, great filtering, pretty decent price points, and a decent rating system.

Well worth checking out, if not to purchase a theme then for getting design inspiration.

Pixelgrade

I’ve come across Pixelgrade themes on my travels. By travels, I mean spying on the competition and seeing what they use haha. But the themes seemed solid enough to me.

Themify

The last on this list is Themify.

This is another site that seems to be well respected. It’s themes tend to pop up now and again when I am doing my ‘research’ on competitor sites.
