Swansea Man is Iron Man

The makers of the billion dollar man would be proud of a Swansea man who has printed himself a new hand…Father of two, Stephen Davies from the South Wales city has used a 3D printer to build himself a custom hand, after getting fed up with the claw he had been given by his doctors.

Father of two, Stephen Davies from the South Wales city has used a 3D printer to build himself a custom hand, after getting fed up with the claw he had been given by his doctors.

Oh, and did we mention? He’s a big film buff and took his inspiration for the hand from Iron Man.

The red, black and blue hand is based on the Iron Man film starring Robert Downey Jr and is more functional than his previous ‘claw’ which made him want to hide his disability. It gives him a basic grasping motion which he never had before.

Davies had the hand made from his design by a group called e-NABLE, a community organisation which 3D prints devices for children and adults who have no fingers, or no wrists or hands. The voluntary group has provided a ‘helping hand’ to hundreds of children and adults around the world, giving them a fun and functional solution to an ailment they were born with.

His hand was built to scale, by taking measurements from his right hand. The 40-year-old, who was born with one hand, said it looks fantastic.

He told the South Wales Evening Post: “Instead of walking down the streets with my hands in my pocket I walk down the street and look cool now.”

He now hopes to raise £1,000 so that he can become part of the network, and print hands and body parts for others, in a true example of paying it forward.
